As we know, obd cable is used to connect the DLC (Data Link Connector) on vehicles. Though J1962 OBD-II requires all DLC should be unified and standard. So that no matter vehicle, diagnostic tool or obd cable can match each other, and it is convenient for test.
But due to many factors, many vehicles in the market are equipped with different protocols and they supports different pin assignment.
For example, Asian cars, European cars and Chrysler mainly use ISO9141-2 or ISO14230 (KWP2000) OBD-II protocol. These two protocols use pin 4, 5, 7, 15 and 16. Car from Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn, GM James and so on adopts J1850 VPW protocol. And obd cable supports this protocol should use pin 2, 4, 5 and 16. For cars from Ford Motor, they adopt J1850 PWM protocol and the obd cable should use pinholes 2, 4, 5, 10 and 16. However, for new cars after 2008, ISO 15765 protocol is widely used, so the working pin of obd cable is 4, 5, 6, 14 and 16. Pin assignment is very important for a obd cable, please check and confirm pin definition before order, so that can avoid compatibility problem of the obd cable.
