When the check engine light is on, user can use OBD2 scanner to detect fault code. Through the fault code, the maintenance personnel can find the problem accurately and then repair it.
In the function description of our OBD2 scanner, we often see that it can clear fault codes. So what is the use of this feature?
After doing maintenance and troubleshooting for electronic control system, we also need to erase the fault codes stored in ECU. So that the ECU can record and store new fault codes in future. If ECU keeps the old fault code, it will output new and old codes together when the fault occurs again. When OBD2 scanner reads fault code, it is also read out old and new fault codes together. The user will not know which code is for current fault and which is for solved problem.
There are two kinds of fault codes: one for accidental fault and the other is for actual failure. Usually, user can clear accidental fault code if the fault does not appear again. But if it is a real fault, it should prepare the fault before eliminating the code.
In the past days without OBD scanner, some users used to cut off power of the control unit. Make the control unit go back to the initial state. In this way, the fault information in memory will disappear. But it is necessary to make sure there is no fault with the vehicle before doing that. Otherwise, the trouble code will reappear again when you use the car.
If there is OBD scanner in hand, user can test the car again after maintenance. After confirming that there is no fault code, the OBD2 scanner can help user to clear the fault code.
