Every time the car engine starts, ECU must carry out a series of diagnosis. If there is problem with the vehicle, the MIL on the instrument panel will light up. So that can prompt the user to detect fault with car scan tool. So when will MIL be on? There are the following situations:
1. After the ignition is on but the engine has not started, MIL must be on. After the engine starts, the OBD-II system has not found fault, the MIL should be off. The vehicle use this way to check whether the Malfunction Indicator Lamp works normally or not.
2. When the emission exceeds the limit of OBD requirements, the engine enters into permanent emission fault state.
3. Misfire may damage the catalyst.
4. Emission related faults occurred in two consecutive operations. Such as engine starting, operating conditions and flameout.
5. Faults occurred during ECU self-test.
Except the first case, other situations require OBD2 scan tool to confirm what’s the fault. With the help of obd2 scan tool, user is able to check fault details, location, cause, etc. So that can arrange maintenance before it becomes worse.
Will MIL automatically turn off after detecting with car scan tool? MIL usually goes out under the following conditions:
1. The OBD-II diagnostic system has not found fault after the engine is started.
2. The misfire rate of the engine does not reach the limit value that may cause damage to the catalytic converter. Or the misfire rate will not cause damage to the catalytic converter since there is changed conditions.
3. There is no fault during three consecutive operation cycles.
After inspection and maintenance, obd2 scan tool can help user to clear old fault codes. After that MIL will go out. And it won't reappear the next time.
