Why Use OBDII Scan Tool to Read Fault Codes?

There are 5-digit letters and numbers with the OBD-II fault code read by OBDII scan tool, such as P0123. The first digit of the fault code is letter, like P, B, C and U. P is the powertrain, B is the body electrical. C stands for chassis system. U means undefined or network fault of vehicle. The second digit indicates who defined the code. The third digit represents the subsystem of the detected system. The last two digits of the fault code are for the manufacturer’s definition.

ECU of vehicle with electronic control system has fault self-diagnosis function. Once a component or a line fails, ECU will record the relevant fault code. At the same time, the ECU will command the check engine light to turn on.

Most of time, the check engine light on the instrument panel is off. And it is unnecessary to use the OBD scan tool to check fault code. sometimes the check engine light is on occasionally. It also does not need to check with obdii scan tool if the vehicle is normal. However, if the check engine light is always on, you need to use OBD2 scan tool to check fault code.

Using OBDII scan tool to read fault code can help maintenance technician quickly find the fault location and cause. Reduce the scope of maintenance, improve the efficiency of maintenance.

However, the fault code read by OBD scan tool is for reference only. Because fault information of some electronic components cannot be reflected to ECU through electronic control parameters. Some fault codes do not indicate damage of electronic components, mechanical failure can also generate fault code. We should analyze the fault code, data stream and fault condition read by OBD2 scan tool. So as to eliminate the fault effectively.
