OBD cable for auto diagnosis is with standard and universal connector. And there is also a standard OBD-II connector on the vehicle to match the obd cable. The standard obd connector is also named DLC (short for data link connector). DLC is an inverted trapezoidal socket with 16 pin, which is designed according to the standard of SAE-J1962, and its European counterpart ISO / DIS 15301-3.
There are two common versions of DLC in J1962 standard: Type A for 12V vehicles and type B for 24V vehicles. The main difference between the two types of DLC is the gap between the two rows of pinholes. Type A DLC has only one narrow gap, while type B DLC has two separate gaps. This design effectively avoids the possibility that the 12V obd cable is wrongly connected to the 24V DLC, resulting in the possibility that the obd coble is burnt out. So user need to confirm which type is correct before order obd cable.
The DLC is generally located inside the cab near the bottom of the driver's side dashboard near the steering column. The DLC of some cars is inside a small plastic door. Users need to open a small door to see it when use the obd cable.
External obd2 diagnostic tool including obd cable will access to ECU of the vehicle via the DLC connector. And DTC code and other vehicle data is output from the connector.
